The collaboration between Ida Toninato et Jennifer Thiessen is a rich fusion of distinct musical worlds, resulting in a striking conversation in sound. Their artistic relationship developed when they toured the world with the dance company La La La Human Steps. Their ongoing musical exploration transcends genre boundaries and flourishes in the contrast between their primary instruments: the baritone saxophone and the viola.

Their first album, The Space Between Us, nominated for JUNO and Opus awards in 2019, epitomizes their unique approach. By mixing contemporary, classical, folk, baroque, and experimental music influences, they reframe traditional musical expectations. This organic interaction is a creative conversation where tension and harmony co-exist. The rich resonance of the baritone saxophone and the nuanced sensitivity of the viola and viola d’amore form an unexpected and captivating soundscape. Voices and silence also play crucial roles in the duo’s artistic language, signaling an integral vulnerability.

The artistic trajectory of Toninato & Thiessen is a constantly evolving journey starting with the performance of minimalist chamber music by Gavin Bryars with contemporary dance and explored across new sonic landscapes. After touring their debut album, they returned to an intimate creative space, deepening their individual practices and immersing themselves in the unknown, which nourishes their ongoing musical dialogue.

In 2022, Toninato & Thiessen composed a series of pieces for their live show Winter[City]Speaks (GroundSwell) before embarking on the creation of their second full-length album. Dream of Heat was born out of a desire to embrace the energy of winter, to put down their usual tools and to rest in the deep cold. With an openness to new ways of playing, composing and creating, they wrote lyrics, created songs, built rhythms, improvised relentlessly and wove a new tapestry of sound. Collaborating with producer Jason Sharp and sound engineer Radwan Ghazi Moumneh for studio arrangements, production and recording in 2023-24 allowed them to reach new artistic heights.

Song after song, Dream of Heat takes a haunting journey, beginning with an icy dive into hibernation and ending as the water begins to flow, resuming its course.

This duo music is an intimate, intense gaze between two contrasting characters. Listening to the opposing timbres and tendencies of our individual instruments, we shape the space between us.
