This duo music is an intimate, intense gaze between two contrasting characters. Listening to the opposing timbres and tendencies of our individual instruments, we shape the space between us. De tournées internationales en expérimentations sonores dans des bâtiments abandonnés, Jennifer Thiessen et Ida Toninato ont développé une profonde connivence musicale. Désintéressées des styles et définitions cloisonnantes, elles utilisent les contrastes de leurs instruments respectifs pour s’aventurer dans l’inconnu et créer leur poésie à deux. Leur conversation, nourrie de silence et de résonances, est faite de bois, de métal, de crins, de souffle et de chair. La rencontre d’une viole d’amour et d’un saxophone baryton, pour le moins inattendue, est le terrain idéal d’une fascinante interaction.

Rompue aux répertoires contemporain, pop, classique, pratiques improvisées, musiques folk et baroque, Ida Toninato et Jennifer Thiessen se rejoignent dans l’urgence du désir de création. Elles se sont rencontrées dans les studios de la compagnie La La La Human Steps et ont interprété le minimalisme de Gavin Bryars pour la création New Work du chorégraphe Édouard Lock un peu partout en Europe et en Amérique du Nord. Depuis, elles ont improvisé, joué, composé, chanté, parfois hurlé dans toutes sortes de contextes et se sont promis de garder certains trésors pour l’intimité de leur rencontre en duo.

Leur album, The Space Between Us, était lancé sur l’etiquette de disques Ambiances Magnétiques en décembre, 2017.

From experimenting in abandoned buildings to performing in concert halls around the world, Ida Toninato and Jennifer Thiessen cultivate an ongoing conversation in sound. Unconcerned with genre, definition, scene, or expectation, these two skilled musicians confront the contrasts of their individual instruments and attitudes to speak and listen dynamically. Conversing in sound and silence, their tools are strings, reeds, wood, metal, breath and body. The unexpected union of baritone saxophone and viola d’amore, with opposing idiomatic timbres and tendencies, provides fascinating material for creative debate and surprising agreement. The addition of human voices intensifies the palette of possibility for deep interaction.

Formed in the worlds of contemporary, classical, improvised, pop, folk and baroque musics, Toninato and Thiessen share a desire to create honest new music. They met in 2010, performing minimalist chamber music by Gavin Bryars as members of the on-stage quartet for La La La Human Steps’ final show, New Work. Since then, they have pursued their own diverse solo and ensemble projects, and have improvised together with dancers and sound artists, but this duo music is their ongoing private conversation.

Their debut album, The Space Between Us, was released on the Ambiances Magnétiques label in December, 2017.
